Some of our visitors today were wondering about our special breed of one-antlered reindeer! But don’t worry, reindeer lose their antlers each spring and then spend the summer growing a new pair, apart from feeling a bit lopsided when they lose one at a time they come to no harm, in fact this allows the females to become the most dominant for a few months! Onni will have to watch out as Anja & Salka will be in charge for a while….

Look at all the lovely cards our visitors made yesterday for their favourite Walby Farm Park animal friends! There’s still time today, I wonder who will get the most cards?

Tomorrow you can ice a bun for someone special (but not the animals!) and there’s Daffy Dill on Wed 15th & Fri 17th to add to the entertainment with Daffy’s magic show, balloon modelling, plate spinning and lots, lots more!

Itching to get the incubator going

To encourage all those budding rare breed enthusiasts out there we thought you might like to a pic of our handsome Buff Orpington cockerel ‘Woody’ who was hatched and reared by Heidi Moulton and her students at Woodchurch High School in the Wirral. Our fab team in the Animal Barn have just loaded up the incubator for our first hatch of 2012 so hopefully by February half-term we’ll have some lovely fluffy chicks for you to cuddle!

Walby Farm Park’s first sheep maternity ward of 2012! We have some expectant Mums – ‘Zwartble’ ewes, we hope to bring you some pics soon and maybe even some video footage! Glad it’s a little warmer for those late night visits to the Lambing Shed!

Safe arrival – despite the cold!

Speckles our Pietrain X Duroc X Berkshire sow and her new litter (proud Dad Winston, of course!) which arrived yesterday during the freezing cold night! Just waiting for our first lambs now – pictures of the maternity ward to follow tomorrow!

A Cheep Christmas!

Santa and his elf were in a flap this week! They were greeted by the surprisingly unseasonal arrival of a clutch of 5 chicks! Nick Hastings, Head Stockperson, at Walby Farm Park said “I knew she had been sitting but I just didn’t think they would hatch in the conditions, particularly as the weather turned colder this week, they obviously didn’t want to miss out on the Christmas entertainment.”
Santa Claus himself thought they were a bit too keen on his beard, but mum – a Buff Sussex / Silkie cross seemed quite happy sitting on his knee whilst keeping a watchful eye on her brood.
Visit the Christmas chicks or visit Walby’s Christmas events, including Santa’s Grotto, they’ll be running between 12pm – 4pm every Saturday and Sunday in December, except the 24th and 25th of December when the farm will be closed. The events will also be taking place between 12pm and 4pm in the week leading up to Christmas; from Monday 19th of December to Friday 23rd of December.
